Our History

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 by leaders of the women’s suffrage movement to create a more perfect democracy. For more than 100 years, the LWV has been a nonpartisan, activist, grassroots organization that believes voters play a critical role in democracy. Since 1950, the LWV of Anchorage has championed nonpartisan voter education, civic engagement, and transparent government.

We are neighbors, volunteers, and advocates working to protect democracy and empower citizens. Our mission is rooted in the belief that democracy is strongest when everyone participates. That work is more important now than ever.

75 YEARS: LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS
OF ANCHORAGE

For more than 75 years, the League of Women Voters of Anchorage has helped residents participate in local democracy through voter education, nonpartisan election tools, and civic engagement. From early efforts to register voters and publish guides to shaping major municipal issues, the League became a trusted voice for transparent and accountable government. Today, it continues its mission of empowering voters and strengthening civic life across Anchorage.

Empowering Voters with Ballot Clarity

Each year, our volunteers work closely with municipal staff to create the Ballot Review, a trusted, nonpartisan guide delivered to every Anchorage household. It helps voters understand candidates, bond propositions, and how to vote with confidence from home or at the polls.
