Project & Programs
The LWV of Anchorage works on a wide range of issues related to democracy and voting. League volunteers register voters, talk to high school seniors about the election process, and speak out on important issues. For example, the League actively supported mail-in voting in Anchorage municipal elections, advocated for Ranked Choice Voting and open primaries, and opposed an attempt to politicize the Municipal Clerk’s office. The League also engages in get-out-the-vote efforts and voter education.
Ballot Review
For more than 20 years, the LWV of Anchorage has worked with the Municipality of Anchorage’s Municipal Clerk’s Office to produce, print, and distribute the Ballot Review —a comprehensive description of the issues and candidates to be included on the annual municipal ballot.
The Ballot Review is mailed to every household and postal customer within the Municipality of Anchorage. Its purpose is to provide voters with candidate information for mayor, assembly, or school board and descriptions of bond propositions, special ballot propositions, or charter amendments that require voter approval.
The Ballot Review also includes information on how to vote at home, the locations of secure drop boxes, the hours and locations of the voting centers, bus routes to reach each of these locations, and other general information on how to vote by mail.
Youth Vote
Anchorage Youth Vote has been an initiative of the League of Women Voters of Anchorage since 2002. It provides a non-partisan venue for empowering youth to vote and be involved in the democratic process. Youth Vote provides young people with tools to reach this goal.
Anchorage Youth Vote has run mock elections, organized candidate forums, created voter tools, and produced videos and public service announcements. Youth Vote has also developed anti-bullying training, a project that has gained national recognition.
